spotlight on the south asian communityspotlight on: the South Asian community

South Asia constitutes the southern part of the Asian continent, comprising of countries that were part of the former British Indian Empire, including current territories of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Burma. India is the largest economy in the region and the world’s 4th largest by purchasing power adjusted exchange rates.

South Asians began immigrating to the States through Indian communities in other countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and other Southeast Asia nations since the 1800s. Their growth rate has been over 50% within the past ten years. The US State with the largest Indian American population is 330,000 in California, 255,000 in New York, 175,000 in New Jersey, 140,000 in Texas, and 130,000 in Illinois (U.S. Census 2000). South Asians comprise 16.4% of the Asian-American community and is the third largest group in the Asian American population. They have the highest annual media household income among all US ethnic groups, 64% of have attained a bachelor’s degree, and 40% have at least a master’s degree. The combined disposable income is $88 billion, with an estimated annual buying power of $20 billion.

These various South Asian / Indian sub-groups present numerous intergroup and intragroup differences in terms of acculturation level, identification with cultural values, language, religion, diet, customs, beliefs, education level, and social-economic status. This community together is one of the most vibrant of all Asian American cultural groups.

A study by Duke University and UC Berkeley revealed that Indian immigrants have founded more engineering and technology companies from 1995 to 2005 than immigrants from the UK, China, Taiwan, and Japan combined. One third of the engineers in Silicon Valley are of Indian descent, while 7% of valley hi-tech firms are led by Indian CEOs.

Over 90% of South Asians own a TV and approximately 80% own computers and use internet on a daily basis, and radio is still highly used in certain areas. Many metropolitan cities with high South Asian populations have movie theaters specialized in Bollywood films.

Mango – Pineapple Chutney
Chutneys come in two major groups, sweet and hot; both forms usually contain various spices, including chili, but differ by their main flavor.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 large sweet onion, minced
4 inch piece fresh ginger root, peeled and minced
1 large yellow bell pepper, diced
3 large ripe mangoes, peeled, pitted, and diced
1 small pineapple, peeled and diced
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons curry powder
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the red pepper flakes and cook until they begin to sizzle, and then stir in the minced onion. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook, stirring occasionally until the onions have softened, about 20 minutes..

Remove the lid, increase the heat to medium, and stir in the ginger and yellow bell pepper. Cook and stir until the ginger is fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the mangoes, pineapple, brown sugar, curry powder, and vinegar. Bring to a simmer, and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool the chutney completely when done and store in airtight containers in the refrigerator.
