Moving halfway through 2011 and officially into summer, Caribbean American Heritage Month marks the theme of this month’s community spotlight. San Francisco’s infamously cold summers still have us clinging to our cardigans but we hope you’re able to enjoy some sunshine alongside all the multicultural news and insights we’ve provided in this edition of réd.
Thousands of islands make up the Caribbean region off the coasts of Florida, South America and Central America. Four of the largest are Cuba, Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti) and Jamaica. Hence, most Caribbean Americans descend from these islands. At 4.6 million, these four cultural groups account for about 1.5 percent of the population.

Study: Asian Americans Eat Junk Food to Prove Americanism A study scheduled for release next month suggests that immigrants are more likely to choose unhealthy foods when they are pressed to demonstrate their American identities. University of Washington researchers set out to disprove explanations of affordable unhealthy foods as the cause for weight-gain among immigrants. Deciphering the ethnic, digital consumer African Americans are the heaviest TV consumers, Hispanics out-text all ethnic groups, and Asians are the most active computer and Internet users. Nielsen infographics break down these and more trends among U.S. ethnic consumers Hispanics: Heaviest Users of Social Media and Mobile Phones A report released by the Hispanic Institute shows that Latinos outpace other demographic groups as users of mobile phones and social media. The report focuses on Hispanics' mobile usage in the immigration, education and voter registration arenas.
TV Sales 'Take On Hispanic Accent' The 2010 Census results have prompted TV executives to step up their sales pitches to the Hispanic market, according to a New York Times article. There are just as many presentations from Spanish-language programmers as there are from English-language broadcasters in the run-up to the 2011-12 season. Corporate America Goes For Multilingual PR NPR's third story in a month-long series about the public relations industry featured multilingual communications. Thursday's story was more about the intricacies of Asian American marketing and advertising than it was about PR, but still, makes for a multicultural industry read. Increasingly Multicultural Children are the Future Young populations tend to be the trend-setters for American society, and the Census reveals that most children in the U.S. are multicultural. Edelman's Loida Rosario says "understanding them is a peek into the new mainstream trends." Investing in the Future of Our Hispanic Labor Force Penn State's Knowledge@Wharton put out an analysis of the importance in investing in America's burgeoning Hispanic population. It's not just about marketing to them, but also about the implications of their integration into American society.
Comcast Announces Milestone In TV Viewing: Consumers Watch 20 Billion Entertainment Choices On Demand
Comcast, one of the nation’s leading providers of entertainment, information and communications products and services, today announced that its customers have watched 20 billion entertainment choices On Demand since the service launched in 2003 – an industry first in television (TV).
GMA Networks posts 18% growth in ad and subscription accounts
GMA Network, Incorporated (GMA) started 2011 with an 18 percent growth in consolidated gross revenues from regular advertising and subscription accounts in the first three months of 2011. Airtime revenues delivered by platforms television and radio from regular advertisers grew by 21 percent.
